Risa Wilkerson has more than 15 years of proven leadership in the healthy communities’ field. She is currently Marketing and Communications Director for Active Living By Design (ALBD), located in Chapel Hill, NC. ALBD creates community-led change by working with local, state and national partners to build a culture of active living and healthy eating. Risa leads and collaborates on all aspects of the organization’s marketing and communications strategies. Previously, Risa served as a senior project officer for ALBD and provided coaching, technical assistance and grant oversight to multidisciplinary community-based partnerships across the country. Risa brings wide-ranging experience in coalition building, community assessment, public health program planning and implementation, grant writing and nonprofit management.
Additionally, Risa serves as Board Chair of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership’s (SRTSNP). The SRTSNP is a network of more than 600 nonprofit organizations, government agencies, schools, and professionals working together to advance safe walking and bicycling to and from schools, and in daily life, to improve the health and well-being of America’s children and to foster the creation of livable, sustainable communities.
Risa holds an M.A. in communication from Michigan State University. She is also an alumna of the University of South Carolina’s Physical Activity and Public Health Course, a training program sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
At home, Risa loves to spend time with her husband, Doug, go for runs, kayak North Carolina’s beautiful waters, garden, read, write and spend time with her children and grandchild.
