Melodee Colbert Kean, together with her husband William, is the Owner and Operator of MEs Place Soul Food Kitchen. They also co-own Prayerful Portions, LLC, a small business consulting firm where they assist small businesses with growth strategies and sustainable operations. She is also a MO Licensed Realtor.
As an elected official since April 2006, Melodee is committed to community and civic services. She is the former Mayor of Joplin, and currently on the Joplin City Council. She is instrumental in ensuring Joplin is represented on the federal level serving as the 1st VP of the National League of Cities, an organization which advocates and promotes cities concerns to White House Administration and congressional reps. She is the first MO official to be named to top leadership in more than 50 years.
Melodee serves on the Missouri Municipal Leagues Economic Development & Human Resources Board and is also a Governors Appointee to the Missouri Women’s Council, which assists women interested in starting a business, as well as being a resource for those already running a business.
She also serves the educational sector by serving on the Missouri Southern State University Robert Plaster School of Business Advisory Board, helping to develop policy and program initiatives to grow the business school. She has served as President of Joplin Metro Credit Union Board, and member of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Board, the NAACP Joplin Branch, the Discover Downtown Alliance and VP of the Joplin Emancipation Committee. Melodee remains focused on growing the economic environment and developing the cultural and arts entertainment offering in Joplin.
A graduate of Missouri Southern State University with a Marketing Degree, Melodee’s career experience includes managerial and business development, negotiations, retail management, budgeting, customer service, leadership and motivational speaking.
A lifelong Joplin resident, Melodee and her husband William Kean Jr., have a son in the Marine Corps, a college daughter, a daughter teaching high school science and a daughter in the third grade. Melodee is a member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church serving as Assistant Recording Secretary.
