James R. Whitehead is Executive Vice President and CEO of the American College of Sports Medicine, the world’s largest organization dedicated to sports medicine and exercise science. ACSM represents more than 60,000 international, national and regional members and certified professionals. Jim has helped develop and guide many organizations, coalitions and initiatives, including the National Physical Activity Plan, the National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity, the Inclusive Fitness Coalition, the Female Athlete Triad Coalition and the Joint Commission on Sports Medicine and Science. He has served as a speaker, panelist, or consultant for more than 125 organizations, including the U.S. Olympic Committee, the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, and the American Public Health Association.
Through ACSM and other organizations, Jim Whitehead has been an active participant in discussions of health policy, working to promote the benefits of physical activity and exercise and to reduce sedentary behavior. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he earned degrees in political science (public administration) and history (business and medical history).
