Eloise Elliott, Ph.D.

Eloise-Elliott-100x118Dr. Elliott is the Ware Distinguished Professor in the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences at West Virginia University and has been working in the area of children’s physical activity and physical education for over 30 years. Her expertise in curriculum development and pedagogy has led her to develop a number of innovative school curricular resources, including web-based instructional modules to supplement school health instruction.  She is also the creator of Active Academics, a nationally-recognized web-based resource for classroom teachers to integrate physical activity throughout the school day.

Dr. Elliott served as the chair for the development of the first Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program (CSPAP) Position Statement for AAHPERD/SHAPE America. She has served on numerous state and national committees, and was honored as the AAHPERD Health Educator of the Year (communities) and the recipient of the WVHAPERD Ray O. Duncan award. Dr. Elliott was appointed to the Clinical Advisory Board of the WV Governor’s Healthy Lifestyles Coalition, and has recently been appointed to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition Science Board.

As Associate Director for Interventions for the WV CARDIAC Project in the WVU School of Medicine, her research also includes childhood obesity prevention and the development, implementation, and evaluation of interventional strategies to change children’s behaviors related to physical activity and healthy eating.  Her recent work has included the study of WV’s obesity crisis where she led the development of one of the first statewide strategic plans modeled after the National Physical Activity Plan, ActiveWV: The West Virginia Physical Activity Plan.
